Book Research – Major film project

I went into the library to do some research on animated documentaries. I found this very useful as it has given me some ideas on how my film should look and the different animation methods that filmmakers have done in the past.

Books authors

  • Annabelle Honess Roe
  • Robert Russett
  • Cecile Starr
  • Andy Glynne
  • Judith Kriger
  • Richard Taylor

I would recommend these books to anybody who wants to do an experimental film or documentaries.

Workshop_3 Storyboard Review

During the workshop, I was still struggling with how to present my film in a second animatic as my film is based on real-life footage that’s going to be rotoscoping for the final cut.

After showing my tutor my idea and the direction I want the film to take, he advised me how to create my second animatic without using drawing. He advises me to make a shortlist of live-action for the rotoscoping and try and follow the hitch cock method when it comes to camera shots and angles. Place the live-action footage for the animatic or a still image if theirs no movement you can still put for example the people walking around the shot. The film will be 3-4mins, but the length doesn’t matter its the quality of animation and what you do with it.

Production

Subject focus: Catcalling

The acts of shouting harassing and often sexually suggestive, threatening, or derisive comments at someone publicly.

Though I seldom witness catcalling or verbal harassment, I’ve come to understand how constant and burdensome it can be for women, especially when the words used are crude, violent, or degrading.

  • Why is it so terrible?
  • Visually explore: how you feel?
  • It is about power not about compliments or picking up women.
  • The voice needs to tell stories about their experience while being catcalled, how did it make them feel? Angry, embarrassed etc.
  • Get the target audiences to feel empathy and make it personal.
  • Idea: interview a male perspective as “the devil argument”.
  • The male perspective could say something like, “oh it’s only a bit of fun between us guys, guy banter.”
  • Catcalling is about “Power” and relations within it.
  • Idea: A women being destroyed by all these unwanted sexual attentions.
  • Is it a form of Bullying and why?

Interview dialogue example:

Based on interviews with a few people about their personal experiences and opinions about these issues of catcalling women in public.

“I was walking into kings’ cross stations, minding my own business when theses group of men started whistling at me like I was a someone’s pet dog! they started shouting inappropriate things to me like ow-ow good looking show us your p*&^%/! I was so embarrassed I started feeling hot under the collar with anger”

While the voice-over is playing in the background, the visual metaphor will take place. Need to find women who have had an issue with catcalling and can tell us about.

Major Project: Presentation (ideas)

Idea 1: WE ARE WOMEN Documentary 2020.

we are women

[Working Title]

A 2D animated abstract/ experimental documentary about a range of women and men share their personal stories and opinions; different styles and textures of animation visualise each voice. The film shows various women and men being interviewed about their stories of being feminist or theories about feminism. These include discussions about Women’s Rights, Gender Equality, body image, Men, and why all women should be feminist.
I’m searching for women and men to interview for this project. I’d be interested to hear story’s and opinions from the group or the individual and get an interesting perspective on the subject.

Start of production: INTERVIEW WITH Penelope Konstanara at NFTS

During the Christmas period, I got in contact with Penelope “Penny” A Model Maker & Designer at The National Film and Television School. I told her about my graduation project idea and was happy for me to meet up with her for an interview. The interview was filmed and recorded for Narration and the notion of references for realistic movement for the animation.

Screenshot 2020-01-20 at 20.42.26The Interview took over an hour to complete, and I was delighted with the results.
We covered a lot of themes and topics that relate to feminism. This interview helps me gain some ideas on what problem that the documentary is going to be the focus. Feminism is a big subject and quite hard to narrow down to a specific theme.

By the end of the interview, Penny wanted to be part of the project and told me she could help me find other students at NFTS to be interviewed by putting up posters to help advertise the film. We plan to book up a meeting in a couple of weeks.

Inspiration:

Private Parts by Anna Ginsburg https://vimeo.com/185711393

The film Private Parts is a primary inspiration for the idea of this documentary. The art design and animation have given me some ideas on how I could take my art style and technology skills to the next level. This will be a good opportunity to learn Morphing. (an animation technique) And also to explore and break up colours and transform them into an object/character or into a new scene.

Hot and Tasty By Laura Jayne https://vimeo.com/348936749

The interaction between the two characters is fascinating to watch and has given me some ideas on how I can animate my characters while the narration is going on in the background. I can animate the characters in an exaggerated way.

THE STYLE IM GOING FOR (GREAT EXAMPLES OF ROTOSCOPING AND MORTHING)

Idea 2: experimental horror film 2020

From all the images that were sent to me, the one that sparked my interest the most was the Barbie heads in the candy slot machine. The image is quite creepy, and it made me think about the Barbie doll in 1963. How it had a lot of controversies, such as the “body image” and how a lot of young girls looked up to barbie as a role model when it came to “Beauty”.

Due to its black and white presence, I had an idea to make to an experimental horror film. Where young women would wear the barbie heads to show their beauty, as being natural looking is not enough to spark attention. Then I would turn the film into a dark horror to show its audiences that looking like barbie isn’t all that cracked up to be.

Animation: Rotoscoping on the original footage, or on a black background with white lines. This idea would be interesting to do as a personal project after graduating.
